A Smile Helps You To Communicate

Smiling to communicate is faster and more cost effective than any technology

We are all too eager to attach a smiley emoticon to a text message or email, but smiles should not be restricted just for internet purposes. In the words of Zig Ziglar, a motivational speaker, 1 ‘Be helpful when you see a person without a smile, give them yours’.

A smile costs nothing but yet it’s effect can be priceless. As mentioned in the 2009 film 2 Couples Retreat, ‘tipping is not permitted nor is money of any kind… we do however accept smiles’.

Enjoying the things that make you smile

It is ironic that the tune to the famous song 3 ‘Smile’, was composed by Charlie Chaplin for one of his silent films called ‘Modern Times’ (Lyrics which were written much later by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons embodied the themes of the film). At the end of his film you to see him smiling in a warm embrace with the lady of his dreams.

What smiling does is give us be ability to express a range of emotions, from a sense of relief that everything will be all right, to how happy we feel.

I have travelled to Egypt and to India and the memories that have been predominant in my mind over the years, are off the children, because although many of them had nothing in terms of possessions, I felt that they had more wealth within themselves, than anything they could possibly imagine physically owning, because they were smiling and laughing. The gift of smiling and laughter is also very powerful and a great healer.

Have we lost our gift to naturally smile with strangers?

As the famous song by Louis Armstrong says 4 ‘When you’re smiling, keep on smiling, the whole world smiles with you’, but nowadays we are more likely to do the opposite. I am not advocating that we should smile to conceal when things are not going well for us, which does not feel genuine, however, a simple thing like smiling at someone can make such a difference to our lives and those of others. It is something that we all do a few weeks after birth, however at times it can feel so awkward to do it, although we want to smile.

Share your smile

Think what a genuine smile from someone does for you and how it makes you feel, so please pass on a genuine smile on to others who you sense need it. Don’t let our natural ability to smile with others disappear, you could be throwing someone a lifeline.

I leave you with lyrics to Charlie Chaplin’s beautiful tune:

5   That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying.
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile-
If you just smile.
